USC Women's Soccer Closes Nonconference Play Against New Mexico State

LOS ANGELES – The USC women's soccer team hosts New Mexico State on Thursday at 3 p.m. for their final nonconference matchup of the regular season.

SERIES VS NEW MEXICO STATE - Thursday will be the first-ever meeting between USC and New Mexico State. The Trojans are 3-1 all-time vs. current WAC opposition, and the Aggies are 0-5 vs. current Pac-12 opposition.
AWUJO CALLED UP - Simi Awujo was called up by the Canadian National Team for the winner-take-all CONCACAF Olympic Play-In series. Canada faces Jamaica over two legs on Sept. 22 & 26 for a spot in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. This is the 8th time Awujo has been called up to the Canadian National Team.
BOILERMAKER BEATDOWN - USC took care of another future Big 10 opponent, topping Purdue 4-0 at McAlister Field. Hannah Griffin opened the scoring just two minutes in, and three second-half goals in the span of 10 minutes from Kayla Colbert, Helena Sampaio and Katie Roditis put the match out of reach. It was just the second time in the last two seasons the Trojans scored at least four goals without conceeding. (Oct. 2, 2022 at Oregon - W, 4-0)
CAROLINA TRIP - The Trojans split a pair of top-5 matchups on their weekend trip to North Carolina. USC picked up a big win over No. 4 Duke on Thursday night, taking down the Blue Devils 3-1 in Durham. USC fell behind 1-0 early, but stormed back with three unanswered goals to take the match. Maribel Flores scored the equalizer for her first collegiate goal in the 37th minute, Angeles Escobar (on her birthday) scored the winner in the 62nd and Kayla Colbert put it away with a goal in the 78th. It was USC's second win in two matches against a Top 5 opponent under Head Coach Jane Alukonis (the Trojans beat No. 1 UCLA 2-0 last year) and came against the USC head coach's alma mater. The Trojans closed out the weekend in Chapel Hill, falling 4-0 to No. 3 North Carolina on Sunday. Ally Sentnor scored the lone first-half goal for the Tar Heels on a shot from outside the box. Evelyn Shores a pair of goals in the second half, and Tori Dellaperuta finished things off from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.
BEST AGAINST THE BEST - USC has amassed a 5-1 record against ranked opponents under head coach Jane Alukonis. That includes three victories over top-10 oppoennts, a 3-0 win against No. 6 TCU (Sept. 1, 2022), a 2-0 win over No. 1 UCLA (Nov. 4, 2022) and a 3-1 win at No. 4 Duke (Aug. 24, 2023).

FAREWELL TOUR - USC will be playing its final season in the Pac-12 this year, after announcing in June of 2022 that the school would be making a move to the Big 10 starting in fall of 2024. UCLA, Washington and Oregon also announced they would be moving to the Big 10 in conjunction with the Trojans. USC has a pair of future conference opponents on the schedule in Michigan and Purdue.
