No. 19 USC Women's Soccer Comes Back for 2-1 Win at No. 23 Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 19 USC women's soccer team erased a first half deficit to pick up a 2-1 win on the road over No. 23 Washington State on Thursday night.
Maribel Flores and Hannah Griffin scored off the bench for USC as the Trojans picked up their second Top 25 win of the season. USC improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 play with the win, while Washington State falls to 7-3, 0-2.
Despite USC holding the bulk of possession and outshooting the Cougars 7-3 in the first half, the Trojans entered the break down 1-0 after Margie Detrizio got out on the break and scored for the home team.
After regrouping at half, USC again dominated possession and chances in the second period, and this time the Trojans were able to break through. Flores scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute, floating a shot over the Cougar keeper. Griffin sent home the go-ahead strike in the 78th minute, heading home a free kick in traffic after coming on as a second-half sub. Griffin has two goals on the year, with both being game-winners.
The USC defense held Washington State to seven shots in the second half as the Trojans stormed back for the win. For the game, USC held a 17-10 shots advantage, 8-4 shots on goal edge and had eight corner kicks to just one for the home team.
GOALS
27' – WSU: Margie Detrizio (unassisted) – Detrizio got the ball on the left side and beat two USC defenders as she drove to the middle of the area and fired a shot inside the left post.
62' – USC: Maribel Flores (assisted by Izzy Kimberly) – USC had a shot blocked and the ball fell to Kimberly, who slid a pass to Flores at the top of the area, and Flores floated a right-footed shot into the upper right corner for the goal.
78' – USC: Hannah Griffin (assisted by Angeles Escobar) – USC got a free kick from about 35 yards out and Escobar sent the ball into the box, where Griffin got a head on it despite being surrounded by Cougars. The ball snuck through and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
