Cal Golden Bears hand Trojans first loss of the season
LOS ANGELES – USC men's basketball stumbled for the first time this season, coming up short against the Cal Golden Bears on Sunday night at the Galen Center. The Trojans fell 71-66 to drop to 3-1 on the season.
Junior guard Desmond Claude turned in another strong performance for the Trojans, leading the team in points (20) and assists (3) for the second consecutive game. He was joined in double-digit scoring by graduate forward Saint Thomas (15) and sophomore guard Wesley Yates III (10).
USC started the game off strong against the former Pac-12 rival, going blow-for-blow in the first half and taking a one-point lead at half-time. The Trojan bench also turned in a strong first-half performance, outscoring Cal's bench 15-5.
The Trojans lost momentum in the second half, shooting just 33 percent from the floor and 11 percent from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes. After trailing for most of the game, Thomas scored a jumper to claim the lead for USC with 6:30 to go. However, Cal went on an 8-2 run to close out the game, eking out a five-point victory.
Prior to this game, the Trojans had only trailed for nine minutes the entire season.
The Trojans will look to bounce back on this coming Wednesday when they take on the San Jose Spartans on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Tip-off will take place at 7 p.m. at the Galen Center.
