The Trojans put up 12 blocks to take down the Tritons in three sets at Galen Center

LOS ANGELES – The 12th-ranked USC men's volleyball team (7-3) defeated No. 19 UC San Diego (3-7) in a three-set sweep (25-21, 25-13, 25-21) at Galen Center on Friday, Feb. 2.

KEY PLAYERS

So. OH Riley Haine scored 12.0 points with nine kills (1e, 14att) on .571 hitting and had three blocks (one solo), four digs, one service ace, and three assists.
Fr. S Caleb Blanchette put up 19 assists and had five digs, three blocks, and one kill as he set the Trojans to.385 hitting.
So. OH Dillon Klein reached double-digit kills in a match for the 27th time in his career and finished with a team-high 14.0 points on 11 kills (3e, 23att) and .348 hitting to go with five digs, three blocks (one solo), and a service ace.
Redshirt Jr. OPP Jack Deuchar put up four kills, had four digs, and had two blocks.
Fr. MB Wesley Smith posted six kills (0e) on seven swings to hit .857 and put up six blocks (one solo) and three digs.
For the Tritons, Josh Schellinger led with 10 kills and hit .273 with six digs and three blocks. Evan Boyle had a match-high seven digs and Andrew Boyle put up 28 assists with three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC out-hit UCSD, .385 to .111. Both teams had 32 kills, but the Trojans had a 12-7.5 edge in blocks and put up 27 digs to the Tritons' 21. UC San Diego had three aces to USC's two.
The Trojans sewed up a 25-21 win in the first set behind a .292 hitting performance and five kills from Haine. Klein, Deuchar, and Smith each added two kills apiece and the Trojans posted 3.5 blocks. USC led by as many as five points twice, but the Tritons closed within two at 20-18 before three straight kills by Haine closed out the win.
USC went up, 2-0, with a 25-13 win in set two. The Trojans racked up 8.5 blocks to hold the Tritons to a negative .030 hitting rate and got five kills from Klein in the win.
The Trojans hit .423 in the third set and completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory. Klein and Smith each had four kills apiece, Haine had three, and Deuchar scored two. Off the bench, OPP Noah Roberts had a block and collected his first-career kill on match point to close the books on the Tritons.

UP NEXT

The Trojans face UC Irvine in two matches next week. USC visits Bren Events Center for a 7 p.m. PT midweek meeting on Wednesday (Feb. 7) and then welcomes the Anteaters to Galen Center on Saturday (Feb. 10, 7 p.m.). MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 46-12 all-time against UC San Diego.
The Trojans collected more blocks than their opponent for the eighth time and reached double-digit blocks (12.0) for the sixth time this season.
