Trojans improve to 2-0 in dual play.
LOS ANGELES – No. 17 USC Women's Tennis looked unstoppable on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the UC Irvine Anteaters 4-0 at Marks Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Women of Troy dominated from the start, taking a commanding lead in doubles play. Sophomore Lily Fairclough and freshman Anya Murthy recorded a quick 6-1 victory on court two and were shortly matched by senior Sloane Morra and freshman Jana Hossam on center court. Graduate Maia Sung and sophomore Immi Haddad had a 4-3 lead on court three when doubles play paused.
With the double point secured, USC made quick work of the Anteaters in singles play as junior No. 45 Emma Charney stormed to a 6-0, 6-2 victory on center court. With the Trojans up by two, Morra downed her opponent 6-2, 6-0 on court four to put the Trojans within one. Sung clinched the match with a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 victory on court three over UCI's Carolyna Fowler.
Both Murthy and freshman Simone Kay made their Trojan debuts in dual play on Saturday. Murthy held a 6-1, 3-4 lead on court six when play paused, while Kay had battled back after a tough first set and was trailing 2-6, 5-2. Hossam was also within striking distance of victory as play was suspended when she held a 6-3, 5-0 lead on court two.
With a pair of wins under their belt, including a triumph over No. 7 Texas, the No. 17 Women of Troy now turn their sights ahead to ITA Kickoff Weekend at Marks Stadium. USC will play its first match against the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. As host, the Trojans look to use homecourt advantage to punch their ticket into the upcoming ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
