USC Men’s Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader to Start Season
January 20, 2025 | Men's Tennis
The Trojans won four doubles, and 11 singles matches as they shutout UC Irvine and SDSU in the season opener
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis started their season perfectly, sweeping both UC Irvine and San Diego State in back-to-back matches on Monday, Jan. 20 at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Trojans kicked off the day against the Anteaters, starting with a decisive win in doubles play. Graduate Tristan Bradley and senior Peter Makk took home the first point on center court, 6-4, before freshmen Matteo Morazzi and Nathan Trouve won their USC debut on court two, 7-6 (4).
The Trojans were dominant in singles play as well. Trouve picked up the first singles point in a straight-set victory, 6-3, 6-1, on court two, followed quickly by senior Karl Lee on court four, 6-3, 6-1. Makk picked up a massive victory against No. 31 Noah Zamora on center court to clinch the match and take home his second-ranked win of the year, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
With the victory against Irvine clinched, the Trojans chose to play out the remaining courts, giving both freshman Niels Hoffmann and Morazzi their first career dual victories on courts five and six. Junior Oscar Weightman's match on court three was the only one not to finish.
With one victory, the Trojans turned their attention to the Aztecs. Freshman Connor Church and Hoffmann scored first on doubles court three, 6-4. Makk and Bradley once again put up a strong showing on center court to lock in the doubles point with a 6-3 victory. Makk (center court), Church (court five) and Hoffmann (court three) all turned in decisive, straight-set victories in singles competition to lock in the win for the Trojans, with Hoffmann scoring the clinching point.
With the win secured, USC again chose to play out the match's remaining courts. After falling short in the first set, Trouve, Bradley and Lee all rallied during their second sets, forcing their matches into a tie-break. With the momentum on their side, the Trojans all won their third sets, completing USC's sweep of both SDSU, and of the day.
Now 2-0 on the season, the Trojans will turn their attention to this coming weekend, when they will head to Tuscon, AZ, for ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Trojans will play their first match on Saturday, January 25, against Arizona.
