Trojans fall 4-2 to the Waves.
LOS ANGELES – No. 21 USC women's tennis suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to the Pepperdine Waves at Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Women of Troy, who fall to 5-2 overall with the loss, have now dropped 16 straight matches to the Waves. USC couldn't pull off the comeback as the Waves made a major push in singles play.
In doubles, Emma Charney and Parker Fry downed Pepperdine's Soke/Scilipoti 6-2 on court three moments before Sloane Morra and Jana Hossam beat Grechinka/Harmon 6-3 on court two to haul in the doubles point.
USC couldn't find momentum as it entered singles play, dropping three first sets. Pepperdine evened the score with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on center court as No. 16 ranked Savannah Broadus beat USC's No. 43 ranked Grace Piper 6-2, 6-1. Next, No. 53 ranked Emma Charney put the Trojans back on top, beating Pepperdine's No. 101 Vivian Yang 7-6(4), 6-2. USC's Lily Fairclough fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Pepperdine's No. 52 ranked Anastasiia Grechkina on court two to even the score.
The final two points of the match went Pepperdine's way - Scilipoti beat No. 71 ranked Jana Hossam 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 on court five and finally Duru Soke outlasted Trojan Maia Sung 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 on court six. The remaining match on court five was abandoned with No. 39 ranked Alexia Harmon leading USC's Immi Haddad.
USC returns to action on Friday, March 7 at 3 p.m. PST as the Women of Troy host crosstown rival UCLA.
