Trojans beat Bruins after nearly five hours of play.
LOS ANGELES – USC women's tennis triumphed over UCLA on Friday afternoon, dominating the Bruins 4-3 in a brutal five-hour battle for LA.
The Women of Troy drew first blood in the match, winning their eighth straight doubles point this season with a pair of ranked victories. Junior Emma Charney and senior Parker Fry sailed to a swift 6-1 victory on court three over No. 90 Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, while No. 8 sophomore Lily Fairclough and senior Grace Piper followed with a 6-2 victory over No. 12 Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle. USC's No. 44 ranked duo of Sloane Morra and Jana Hossam led the No. 3 ranked duo in the country Fakih/Center 5-2 when play was suspended.
As the match moved to singles play, the Bruins got back in the game with a pair of straight set victories on courts one and three. Freshman No. 118 Jana Hossam evened the score once again for the Women of Troy and defeated Ahmani Guichard 6-0, 7-6 to bring the match to two apiece. Graduate student Maia Sung stormed to victory in three sets on court five, battling back and giving USC the match lead. All attention turned to court two, where USC junior No. 56 Charney and No. 100 Kimmi Hance were deadlocked through three sets. After a tiebreak in set three, UCLA's Hance grabbed the point for the Bruins, leaving court four to decide the match.
It was No. 73 ranked sophomore Immi Haddad who brought the win home for USC after three and a half hours of singles play. After dropping the first set 7-6, Haddad battled back, winning a tight second set 7-5 before pushing through a tiebreak in set three to capture the victory over Wagle.
With the win, the Women of Troy close the door on the first half of their season with a record of 6-2. They now turn their attention to conference play, which begins next weekend on the road against Washington and Oregon.
