USC improves to 3-0 in conference play.
LOS ANGELES – No. 16 USC women's tennis swept to victory in its Big Ten home opener on Saturday, cruising past the Michigan State Spartans 4-0 at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Women of Troy started the match off with a bang, with the No. 5 ranked duo of senior Grace Piper and sophomore Lily Fairclough dominating doubles at center court with a 6-0 victory. The win marked the pair's seventh straight win together. On court two, freshman Jana Hossam and senior Sloane Morra followed with a 6-2 win to secure the doubles point and eighth straight victory as a pair. The Women of Troy have not dropped the doubles point at all this season, winning the early point 11 straight times.
USC carried its momentum into singles play, wasting no time getting points on the board. No. 46 Piper was unstoppable on center court, storming to a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory to give USC its second point. Next, it was No. 82 Immi Haddad who brought the Women of Troy within one point of victory with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph on court four. Finally, Hossam clinched the match on court five with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win. Both No. 69 junior Emma Charney and graduate student Maia Sung were winning on their respective courts when play was suspended.
With Saturday's win under their belt, the Women of Troy now turn their attention to Sunday's match against No. 5 Michigan. First serve will take place at 1 p.m. at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
