The USC beach volleyball duo went 6-0 and didn’t drop a set to win their first AVP crown
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – USC beach volleyball All-Americans freshman Kennedy Coakley (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner HS) and sophomore Ashley Pater (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) teamed up to capture the AVP Palm Beach Open title at the Pompano Beach Fisher Family Pier on Sunday, May 25.
Â
Playing in their home state together, Coakley and Pater went 6-0 and didn't drop a set en route to ascending the podium for their first AVP win. The win also gives Coakley-Pater a wild card berth into the upcoming Manhattan Beach Open set to be played at the Manhattan Beach Pier (Aug. 15-17). Coakley-Pater went 28-4 in dual matches with the Trojans and were named second-team AVCA All-Americans.
Â
Coakley-Pater wrapped up their run on Pompano sand with a 21-19, 23-21 win over the second-seeded pair of Maddie Anderson and Brook Bauer. As the eighth seed in the first AVP contender event of the 2025 season, Coakley and Pater opened the tournament by taking out the 17th-seeded pair out of the qualifier, 21-12, 21-16, over Kaeli Crews and Delaney Peranich. They then went 21-17, 21-16 to take down fifth-seeded Piper Ferch and former Trojan Madison Shields to complete pool play with a pair of victories.
Â
In the first round of elimination play, Coakley-Pater captured a 21-18, 21-15 win over the ninth-seeded tandem of Thais Treumann and Sarah Wood and then completed a 21-18, 21-12 win over 16th-seeded Megan Rice and Kendra VanZwieten to advance to the semifinals. Coakley and Pater continued their torrid pace and moved into the championship match with a 21-18, 21-17 win over the 10th-seeded pair of Aurora Davis and Katie Hogan.
Â
Among other Trojans competing in the Palm Beach Open field, Shields finished in ninth place alongside Maya Gessner (2025) and Molly Phillips (2024). Falyn Fonoimoana—an indoor volleyball standout at USC—finished in 17th place.
