The Trojans move to 7-0 for the second straight year following a 3-0 win over the Gauchos

LOS ANGELES – The fourth-ranked USC men's volleyball team (7-0) swept No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (6-4) in straight sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-16) at Galen Center on Saturday, Feb. 7. The win makes the Trojans 7-0 for the second straight season.

KEY PLAYERS

Sr. OH Dillon Klein led all players with 14.5 points earned on 12 kills (5e, 24att, .292), three blocks, and a service ace. He also had four digs and notched his 68th-career match in double-digit kills.
Redshirt Jr. OPP Noah Roberts reached double-digit kills for the fourth time this season and totaled 10 kills (2e) on 20 attacks to go with five digs, two blocks, and a service ace.
So. MB Parker Tomkinson led all players with eight blocks (two solo) and had four kills (1e, 6att, .500) for 9.0 points.
Jr. S Caleb Blanchette put up 27 assists and set the Trojans to .333 hitting to go with four blocks, three digs, and a kill.
For the Gauchos, Riggs Guy led with 11 kills while George Bruening had seven and Ben Pearson added eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC out-hit UCSB, .333 to .100, and had more kills (35-33), assists (33-31), digs (22-18), and blocks (13.5-3.0). The Trojans reached double-digit blocks for the third time this season.
The Gauchos led set one several times until the Trojans moved ahead to lead by three at 14-11 on a block by Tomkinson. USC continued to press and moved in front by five, 22-17, on a kill by Klein. UCSB closed the gap but a solo block by Tomkinson closed out a 25-21 win for USC. The Trojans had five blocks in total to hold the Gaucho attack to .086 with 12 kills (9e) on 35 swings. USC got three kills from Roberts and two from Klein to hit .250 (9k, 3e, 24att).
USC led set two, 6-1, and then led by six points at 17-11, but UCSB stayed the course to force the frame's first tie at 20-all. The Trojans got one more kill from Klein and another from Roberts to hold on for a 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Klein totaled four kills in set two while Roberts and Kahale Clinihad three each. USC hit .304 with 13 kills (6e) on 23 attacks in the second set and added 3.5 blocks to outpace the Gaucho attack, which had 13 kills (7e) on 29 swings to hit .207.
Despite four early ties in the third, the Trojans controlled the tempo and ran off with a 25-16 win to close out the sweep. Klein had three kills in the first six rallies and finished the frame with six kills and a block. Roberts added four and Tomkinson had three to go with four blocks. The Trojans had their best hitting performance with 13 kills (3e) on 22 swings to log a .455 rate. USC collected five more blocks and held UCSB to .000 hitting (8k, 8e) on 26 attacks.

UP NEXT

USC continues its February run through Big West opponents and takes on No. 5 UC Irvine (11-0) in a home-and-home series next week. The teams meet at the Bren Events Center on Wednesday (Feb. 11) for a 6 p.m. PT midweek bout. There will be no live stream of the UCI-USC match in Irvine. The teams then meet for a rematch at Galen Center on Friday (Feb. 13) at 7 p.m. and will be shown live on Big Ten Plus.

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 60-57 all-time against UC Santa Barbara.
The Trojans moved to 6-0 at home this spring and will play a total of 16 home matches in the regular season.
USC is 7-0 to start a season for the second straight year.
