Mason Edwards Strikes Out 16 in 9-2 Win Over Iowa
April 10, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Mason Edwards matched Barry Zito for the third most strikeouts in USC history with 16 on Friday night, leading the No. 14 Trojans to a 9-2 victory over Iowa.
Edwards' career high came as the junior lefty worked into the ninth inning, allowing just two runs on three hits to move USC to 28-7 overall on the year and 11-5 in Big Ten play. Iowa falls to 18-13, 5-8.
Edwards had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning and took a shutout into the ninth before the visiting Hawkeyes finally got on the board. Iowa's first baserunner came in the fourth inning on a hit-by-pitch and only one runner got past first base against Edwards prior to the ninth inning.
The 16-strikeout performance was the most by a USC pitcher since Zito did it three times in 1999. The Trojan record is 21 strikeouts set by Dale Ziegler in 1957 and John Herbst has the second highest single-game total in program history with 17 in 1965.
The USC offense scored early and kept the pressure on all game, putting up two runs in both the second and third innings while scoring in five of the team's eight frames at the plate. Andrew Lamb had a game-high two RBI as six different Trojans drove in runs in the game. Isaac Cadena had a two-hit day and scored twice as well.
After Iowa got to Edwards for a run in the ninth, Garren Rizzo came in for the final two outs, with a second run scoring on a sacrifice fly before Rizzo struck out the final batter of the game.
Iowa came into the game leading the Big Ten in batting average (.318) and third in the conference in scoring, averaging 8.0 runs per game this season.
