EVANSTON, Ill. -Â No. 10 USC women's tennis powered past Northwestern with a 4-1 road win on Friday at Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, improving its grip on the top of the Big Ten standings.
The Trojans (16-5, 9-1) came out strong in doubles, securing the opening point with wins on courts one and three. The No. 24 ranked pair of Lily Fairclough and Krisha Mahendran set the tone with a 6-2 victory over Northwestern's No. 46 ranked duo of Margot Phanthala and Erica Jessel, while Eugenia Zozaya and Jana Hossam matched that scoreline on court three to clinch the point.
In singles, USC wasted little time building separation. No. 51 Emma Charney delivered a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win on court four to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead and Krisha Mahendran followed with a straight-sets 6-2, 6-3 victory on court five to push USC within one point of the clinch.
Northwestern (12-9, 5-5) got on the board with a win on court two, but the Trojans quickly shut the door. No. 125 Eugenia Zozaya sealed the match with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win on court three, securing the 4-1 final.
Two matches went unfinished, including a tightly contested battle on court one between No. 21 Jana Hossam and No. 90 Margot Phanthala that was headed to a third set.
With the victory, USC extends its win streak to four matches and continues to build momentum in conference play as the regular season enters its final stretch.
USC will be back in action on Sunday in Champaing, Illinois as the Trojans face the Fighting Illini at 10 a.m. PT.Â
