No. 2 USC Women's Tennis Falls to No. 7 Maryland, 4-2, in Big Ten Quarterfinals

Trojans struggle to find momentum during quarterfinals in Columbus.
COLUMBUS, OHIO – The No. 2 seed USC women's tennis team saw its Big Ten Championship Tournament run come to a close on Friday, falling 4-2 to No. 7 seed Maryland in the quarterfinals at Auer Tennis Center.
Maryland struck first by claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The Terrapins' No. 61 duo of Diya Challa and Emma Ghirardato topped USC's No. 29 pair of Lily Fairclough and Krisha Mahendran, 6-3, before Maryland clinched the point on court two with a 6-2 decision over Emma Charney and Immi Haddad. USC's Dani Borruel and Eugenia Zozaya were leading 5-4 on court three when play was halted.
In singles, USC responded quickly behind a dominant performance from freshman No. 118 Eugenia Zozaya on court two. Zozaya delivered a swift 6-0, 6-0 victory over No. 111 Oliwia Orlinska to even the match at 1-1.
Maryland regained the lead with a straight-set win on court four, where Diya Challa defeated Emma Charney 6-3, 6-4. The Trojans answered once again as Immi Haddad picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Magdalena Baniak on court three, leveling the score at 2-2.
The Terrapins secured the final two points to clinch the match. Tamari Gagoshidze posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dani Borruel on court six to put Maryland ahead 3-2. The deciding point came on court five, where Ema Kovacevic outlasted Krisha Mahendran 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 to seal the 4-2 victory.
At the time of the clinch, USC's Jana Hossam was locked in a tight three-set battle on court one, leading into a third set after splitting the first two sets, but the match went unfinished.
With the loss, USC concludes its Big Ten Tournament appearance after a strong regular season in the conference. The Trojans now await postseason selection for the NCAA Tournament.
