SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 14 USC baseball team (27-7, 10-5 Big Ten) dropped a non-conference road game 5-1 to UC Santa Barbara (20-10) in Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Tuesday, April 7.
The Trojans tried to rally back from their 3-1 deficit after the fourth inning, but the Gauchos could not be stopped as USC went on to lose 5-1.
The game was scoreless through two innings until UC Santa Barbara heated up. They scored two runs in the third inning to take the early 2-0 lead.
From there, the Trojans worked to battle back as Adrian Lopez scored a run off a sacrifice fly from Kevin Takeuchi to put USC within one. As the Trojans worked to close the deficit, the Gauchos weren't having it. They went on to add another run in the bottom of the third to keep the two-point lead.
After a scoreless fifth inning, UC Santa Barbara put up two more runs in the sixth and eighth innings. USC couldn't respond, but not for a lack of trying, as they registered three hits and left five runners on base from the top of the sixth inning to the end of the game.
Chase Herrell (3-2) was credited for the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in three innings pitched. UC Santa Barbara's AJ Krodel earned the win to go 2-2 on the season.
