Junior Nicolas Dominguez and the Trojans are tied for third after round one.
BERMUDA RUN, N.C. — Starting off strong at the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional, the USC Men's Golf Team is tied for third after the first round of play at Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, N.C. on Monday, May 18.
Despite playing on a hot, humid day while adjusting to playing in Bermuda grass, the Trojans put themselves in a prime position with a 278 (-6) total at the par-71, 7,013-yard course. USC never found itself over par and moved into the top five early before making a late surge to finish in a four-way tie for third with No. 10 Ole Miss, Wake Forest — which is playing on its home course — and Mississippi State. No. 3 Virginia leads the way with a 271 (-13), while No. 15 Pepperdine is five strokes ahead of USC with a 273 (-11) in second place.
The 14 teams in the Winston-Salem regional have two more rounds to play before the top five teams and the top individual on a non-qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships, held at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. from May 28-June 3. USC is looking for its first NCAA Championship appearance since 2019.
Leading the way for the Trojans, junior Nicolas Dominguez fired a 67 (-4) and is in a six-way tie for third after one round of play. The junior started strong with a bogey-free front side with three birdies before finding some trouble on the par-5 No. 4 for his first bogey of the day. However, he wrapped up his second-lowest round of the year with two birdies in the final four holes to lower his score.
Sophomore Jack Buchanan gives the Trojans two players in the top 15, as he is currently tied for 12th after firing a 69 (-2). He began the day with two birdies on a bogey-free front side before running into trouble on the back side with three bogeys. Yet three birdies, including one on the par-3 No. 8, helped him get out of trouble and remain in a seven-way tie for 12th.
Senior Antonio Safa is the third Trojan in the top-25 after firing a 70 (-1) to tie for 19th place. A birdie and bogey on the front side helped Safa remain at par at the turn before two birdies on the back side helped him move up the leaderboard. He wrapped up his round with his second bogey of the day on the par-4 No. 9 to move into a nine-way tie for 19th.
Sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya is tied for 36th after firing a 72 (+1). Dumdumaya found trouble on the front side with two bogeys and a triple-bogey before recovering with a birdie on No. 18 as he made the turn. Yet he improved with a bogey-free back side that featured two birdies to move into a 14-way tie for 36th.
Rounding out the Trojans, Luke Stock is in 74th with an 81 (+10).
