No. 2 USC Women’s Golf Breaks Several Records to Open Golfweek Red Sky Classic

USC’s 266 (-22) broke the program and course record set by the Trojans last season.
WOLCOTT, Colo. — The No. 2 USC women's golf team couldn't have asked for a better day.
The Trojans broke their own school and course record by firing a -22 (266) during the first round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo. on Monday.
A birdie on the par-5 No. 18 from Jasmine Koo helped the Trojans beat the previous record by one stroke, which USC set at this par-72, 6,383-yard course last season. The other record to go down came courtesy of freshman Kaili Xiao, whose 65 (-7) is the best debut round by a Trojan since Head Coach Justin Silverstein took over the program in the 2018-19 season. She and Koo are currently tied for the lead, while teammate Kylie Chong is alone in third place after firing a 66 (-6).
USC has an 11-stroke lead over second-place Miami, while Texas A&M (-10), Pepperdine (-8) and East Tennessee State (-7) round out the top five. This week, the Trojans are looking to defend their title at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic, which they won last year with a school-record -45 (816).
If Xiao showed any jitters in her debut, they only showed when she bogeyed the first hole. From that point forward, Xiao played bogey-free golf, pushing her score under par with birdies on Nos. 7 and 9 to wrap up the front side. She excelled on the back nine with six birdies, including back-to-back birdies to end the round and put her atop the leaderboard.
Koo played bogey-free golf for the first 16 holes. The junior — who tied for medalist honors at this tournament a year ago — sat at three-under at the turn before surging up the leaderboard with three consecutive birdies midway through the back side. She birdied five of her last six holes, with the lone blemish being a bogey on the par-4 No. 16.
Chong, who also tied for medalist honors at last year's Red Sky Classic, had a bogey-free 66 (-6) that tied the best round of her collegiate career. The junior had one birdie on the front side, but had five on the back side to put her alone in third place.
Sophomore Sarah Hammett also played bogey-free golf in the first round, finishing with a 70 (-2) that is tied for 17th place. Hammett was at par through the first 14 holes before back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15 pushed her score under par.
Senior Bailey Shoemaker is tied for 33rd with an even-par 72, which featured two birdies and two bogeys. Shoemaker was under par at the turn but ran into trouble midway through the back side before a birdie on the par-3 No. 17 brought her to par once more.
Competing as an individual, junior Elise Lee is tied for 50th after firing a 73 (+1) in the first round. Despite finding trouble on the front side, Lee had the only eagle of the team on the par-4 No. 14.
