USC has a 15-stroke lead over the field and four players in the top 10 heading into the final round.
WOLCOTT, Colo. — The No. 2 USC women's golf team extended its lead over the field after the second round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo. on Tuesday.
Surpassing Monday's record-breaking -22 (266) would have been an unrealistic ask, yet the Trojans put together another great round with a -11 (277) at the par-72, 6,383-yard course to take a 15-stroke lead with a -33 (543). Miami (-18), Texas A&M (-17), Pepperdine (-16) and LSU (-14) round out the top five.
USC came into the field as one of the deepest teams in college golf. The squad showed off its depth on day two thanks to sophomore Sarah Hammett and senior Bailey Shoemaker each climbing up over 10 spots in the leaderboard to help the cause. Thanks to their efforts, the Trojans are 13 strokes off breaking the school's team tournament record of -45, set at this event last year.
Continuing her streak of excellent play to begin her sophomore season, Hammett surged 15 spots in the leaderboard, took the lead and wound up in second place with a -9 (135)after firing the best round of her career with a 65 (-7). Her previous low round was a 67 from earlier this season at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
Hammett became the third Trojan to fire a 65 at this tournament with a round that featured six birdies, her first eagle of the season and just one bogey. She bounced back from an opening-round bogey with an eagle on the par-5 No. 2, then carded three more birdies on the front side. She had three more birdies on the back side and momentarily took the lead before finishing in second place.
To win her first career collegiate tournament, Hammett will have to overtake Miami's Scarlett Schremmer, who has a two-stroke lead.
Junior Kylie Chong began the day in third and ended the day in a tie for third after firing a 70 (-2) to have a 136 (-8) heading into the final round. Chong had two birdies and a bogey on the front side, then lowered her score with a birdie on No. 15.
Freshman Kaili Xiao fired an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for sixth place with a 137 (-7). Xiao found trouble on the front side with a double bogey and a bogey in the first four holes, yet she brought her score to par with three birdies on the front side. She found trouble again with three bogeys on the back side before three birdies in the final four holes lowered her score.
Giving USC four players in the top 10, junior Jasmine Koo fired a 73 (+1) to tie for eighth with a 138 (-6). She had three birdies and four bogeys in her round.
Shoemaker rose 11 spots in the standings with a 70 (-2), putting her in a tie for 22nd place with a 142 (-2) total heading into the final round. Shoemaker started strong with three birdies in the first five holes before carding her first bogey on No. 8. She had two birdies and two bogeys on the back side.
Competing as an individual, junior Elise Lee rose 24 spots in the leaderboard to sit in a tie for 26th place with a 143 (-1) total. Lee fired a 70 (-2) in the second round with four birdies and no bogeys on the front side, yet she found trouble late in the back side with four bogeys to just two birdies. She was the biggest mover of the team in round two.
