USC Men's Basketball's Coaching Clinic Imparts Wisdom to Local Youth Coaches

More than 80 coaches from all levels of basketball attended Eric Musselman's first coaches clinic at USC
LOS ANGELES — Coaches from all levels of basketball converged at the USC men's basketball facility at the Galen Center for a day of learning. A slew of former and current NBA coaches, and the USC men's basketball coaching staff headlined the Trojans coaching clinic — imparting their basketball wisdom on the 85 invitees who attended the camp on Sept. 12.
The slate of elite coaching on display included the likes of USC men's basketball head coach Eric Musselman, former New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Fizdale, Olin "the guard whisper" Simplis, former NBA assistant coach Bill Bayno and Team USA and Clippers trainer Jasen Powell.
The USC men's basketball coaching clinic featured a myriad of drills ranging from personal skill development to team drills. And after an intense practice session, all invitees were given access to a panel where the featured coaches shared their professional and personal journeys. The panel discussions were especially helpful for invitees because it allowed professional-caliber coaches like Fizdale or Powell to not only explain the reasoning behind certain drills but also gave space for a more candid conversation about coaching's trials and tribulations.
But beyond the tactics, Musselman wanted the youth level coaches to focus on the "level of detail" during the practice sessions.
"We want the high school coaches to see the communication and the pace that we practice," Musselman said. "We tried to do as many drills that they could take away from and hopefully implement some of these drills at their own school."
Many of the clinic's star-studded coaching staff had ties to the Los Angeles area and is an advantage Musselman pointed to that comes with coaching the Trojans' program.
"It took one phone call to get Coach Dave Fizdale because of the Los Angeles connection," Musselman said. "He talked about walking around the USC campus when he was young because it was so close to his home."
While most of the practice was intended to give the invitees a behind-the-scenes look at collegiate and NBA-caliber coaching, Musselman found the clinic more of healthy exchange of basketball knowledge from coaches who have led teams from all over the world and at all levels.
"I took a ton of notes myself – three pages actually," Musselman admitted. "I learned from all of the speakers and I will definitely be using one or two tidbits from each."
The USC men's basketball clinic's success year is already planting, already planning to expand next year's clinic to match the early interest.
