2007: Maiava was a key backup linebacker and special teams player as a junior in 2007. Overall in 2007 while appearing in all 13 games, he had 44 tackles, including 4.5 for losses of 18 yards (with 2 sacks for minus 11 yards), plus 2 deflections and 1 forced fumble. He even started the Arizona State game on the weakside.
He had 7 tackles (1 for a loss) and a deflection at Nebraska, 2 tackles and a deflection against Washington State, 2 stops at Washington, 5 tackles versus Stanford, 2 tackles against Arizona and 5 tackles at Notre Dame. He then had 4 tackles at California, a team-best and career-high 10 stops (0.5 for a loss) at Arizona State and 2 of his 4 tackles against UCLA were for losses (with a sack). He had 3 tackles (including a sack) and a forced fumble (on the USC 1-yard line, which the Trojans recovered in the end zone) against Illinois.
2006: Maiava was the backup weakside linebacker and a key special teams player as a sophomore in 2006. Overall in 2006 while appearing in 12 games (he missed the Arkansas opener with a shoulder sprain suffered in 2006 fall camp), he had 34 tackles, including 3.5 for losses of 13 yards. He had 8 tackles (0.5 for a loss) at Oregon State, 6 against both Stanford and Oregon (with 1 for a loss), 3 against Washington State and Arizona State and 2 against Nebraska, Notre Dame and UCLA. He had a tackle for a loss against Washington and California. He won USC[apos]s Co-Special Teams Player of the Year Award.
2005: Maiava served as a backup outside linebacker and key special teams player as a first-year freshman in 2005. Overall in 2005 while appearing in all 13 games (he even started against Stanford), he had 20 tackles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 interception that he returned 10 yards. He had 4 tackles versus Stanford and UCLA, 3 against Arkansas (with the interception to set up a USC touchdown) and 2 against Oregon, Washington and Fresno State. He had a tackle and recovered a fumble to set up a USC TD against Texas. He won USC[apos]s Co-Special Teams Player of the Year and Service Team Defensive Player of the Year Awards.
HIGH SCHOOL: Among his 2004 honors were Super Prep All-American, Super Prep All-Farwest, Prep Star All-West, Tom Lemming All-West, Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West honorable mention, Tacoma News Tribune Western 100, Orange County Register Fab 15 second team, Gatorade Hawaii Player of the Year, Honolulu Advertiser All-State first team, All-Maui Interscholastic League Defensive Player of the Year and All-League as a senior linebacker at Baldwin High in Wailuku (Hi.). He had 147 tackles, 39 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, 8 forced fumbles and 5 blocked kicks in 2004, as well as a punt return for a TD.
As a junior in 2003, he was a Honolulu Advertiser All-State pick as he posted 157 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 8 sacks.
He also participated in soccer and boxing at Baldwin.
PERSONAL: He[apos]s a sociology major at USC. His grandfather is ex-pro wrestler Neff Maiava, while his father, Scott Mahoney, was an offensive lineman at Colorado (1969-71), his uncle is pro wrestler/actor 'The Rock' (Dwayne Johnson, who played football at Miami) and his brother, Kai, is a junior offensive lineman at UCLA (he formerly played at Colorado).
