High School: Kao was a prep All-American at Dana Hills High in Dana Point, Calif., where he notched six top 3 finishes in his CIF Southern Section career. He was champion as a junior in the 200y (1:38.01) and 500y free (4:24.70). He was second in the 200y free (1:38.51) and third in the 1000y free (9:14.29) as a senior and was second in the 200y free (1:37.93) and the 500y free (4:26.12) as a 2016 sophomore … He raced in the 200m, 400m and 800m free at the 2018 U.S. Summer Nationals, topped by a 50th in the 800 (8:15.10).

Personal: Kao, born April 16, 2000, is majoring in Human Biology with a Health Care Studies minor. Son of Henry and Karen Kao.
KAO'S PERSONAL RECORDS:
- Returned to competition after suffering an injury during 2020, provided depth for the Trojans in the mid-distance and distance free events.
- At the 2021 Pac-12 Championships, Kao raced in three events, finishing 20th in the 1650y free (15:48.78), 22nd in the 200y free (1:39.78) and 23rd in the 500y free (4:30.21).
- Finished 23rd in the 400 LCM Free (4:10.40) at the U.S. Olympic Team Swim Trials (Wave I).
- Named to the Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll
2020:
- Kao’s 2020 sophomore season was cut short due to injury, forcing him to redshirt.
- Named to the Pac-12 Winter Academic honor roll.
2019:
- Kao competed in three races at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships as a freshman, scoring in the timed final of the 1650y free in 14th (15:21.61). He was also 21st in the 200y free prelims (1:37.09, PR) and 24th in the 500y free (4:25.89) after a PR 4:20.45 in prelims.
- At the Texas Invitational, he finished 13th in the mile in 15:34.64.
- He earned CSCAA Scholar-All American honorable mention honors.
