Los Angeles, Calif. -- 7th-ranked USC women's tennis (13-3, 2-2 Pac-10) recorded a near sweep over Harvard (5-8 overall), 7-1, today at Marks Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Women of Troy collect their fifth-straight victory as they prepare for crosstown rival UCLA on Saturday.
The Trojans posted four wins in straight sets at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 spots. At No. 1, Harvard's Sanja Bajin challenged Kara Warkentin by winning the second set, 7-6, before Warkentin returned to claim the third, 6-1, for the match. In the sixth singles match, USC sophomore Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg needed a come-from-behind effort to defeat Sarah McGinty, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
With a 6-0 USC lead, the Trojan duo of Caroline Christian and Jewel Peterson added the next point for the Women of Troy with an 8-5 decision over the Crimson's Lara Naqushbandi and Jennie Timoney. In the last match of the afternoon at center court, USC surrendered its only point as Harvard's Bajin and Sanaz Ghazal defeated Tiffany Brymer and Warkentin in a close 9-7 match.
