FULLERTON, Calif. -- Heavy rains forced the cancellation of the remainder of the 2000 Kia Baseball Bash at Cal State Fullerton, giving the No. 7 USC Trojans a 7-1 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs after five innings. The game, which was suspended after five innings on Saturday (March 4), was declared official on Sunday when it was determined Titan Field was unplayable.
The Trojans game against Cal State Fullerton, scheduled for today, will be rescheduled for a later date.
With the game being declared official, junior pitcher Rik Currier (Dana Point/Capistrano Valley HS) will get credit for throwing the sixth no-hitter in school history. Currier went five innings, allowing one run, striking out six batters and walking five. The last USC no-hitter was a combined effort between Brad Brink (seven innings) and Brian Brooks (two) vs. Cal State Los Angeles on Feb. 18, 1986, in a 2-1 Trojans win. There have been three other nine-inning no-hitters and one eight-inning no-hitter in the program's history.
Second baseman Anthony Lunetta and first baseman Bill Peavey had two doubles each for the Trojans as Peavey went 2-for-3 with three RBI. The Trojans scored five times in the fifth before play was halted.
The Trojans (11-3) have now won six straight games and will travel to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday before hosting Houston at Dedeaux Field in a three-game series, beginning on Friday, March 10, at 5 p.m.
