Los Angeles, Calif. -- 11th-ranked USC women's tennis (13-6, 3-2 Pac-10) broke a three-match losing slump with a 6-3 win over Washington State (10-10 overall, 1-6 Pac-10), today at Marks Tennis Stadium. The victory puts the Women of Troy back in contention for a top-three conference finish.
The Cougars began the match by earning the first point at the No. 1 singles position when Patrycja Gajdzik posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over USC's Kara Warkentin. With the point in hand, Washington State watched the Trojans win the next four consecutive singles matches to take a 4-1 lead. Despite playing one spot higher in the lineup, USC's Veronika Safarova went on to defeat Melissa Pine, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2. The Trojans allowed the match score to come within three (4-2) with a loss at No. 6, before heading into doubles play.
With another rotation in the lineup, first-time pairs Jewel Peterson and Kara Warkentin clinched the match for USC with a 8-1 win at the top doubles spot. The duo defeated Tamara Filipovic and Pine of Washington State.
The Women of Troy will face Washington tomorrow (April 15) at Marks Tennis Stadium at noon.
