LOS ANGELES -- Josh Persell's three-run homer to right center off the top of the scoreboard keyed a four-run first inning Sunday as the No. 24 USC Trojans completed the Pac-10 series sweep against Oregon State with 16-3 victory. With the win, the Trojans have now won their last seven games and eight of their last nine. USC outscored Oregon State, 44-11, in the three-game series. The Trojans (35-18, 13-8), who have recorded double-digit hits in six of their last seven games, pounded out 16 hits on the afternoon. Persell went 3-for-4 with five RBI while Seth Davidson and Bill Peavey had three hits each. Davidson extended his hitting streak to 13 games and has hit .442 (23-for-52) during that period.
Freshman Anthony Reyes (5-6) went six innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out six batters. James Atwood took the loss for the Beavers (27-25, 8-13) and is now 3-5 on the season. The Trojans broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth inning, four of them unearned. Oregon State made two errors in the inning and walked four Trojans, including Anthony Lunetta with the bases loaded. USC will complete the regular season next weekend at Washington before the 2000 NCAA Tournament. The Trojans will have an opportunity to play next weekend for a possible No. 1 seed in first-round regional play in two weeks. The host sites for the 16 first-round regionals will be announced tomorrow at 12 p.m. (Pacific time).
