The USC women's golf team, ranked No. 1 in Golf World's 2010-2011 preseason poll, used a 2-under 70 from senior Lizette Salas to finish fifth in an 18-team field after the first round of the 2010 Texas A&M Fall Preview on Monday (Sept. 13) at the Traditions G.C. in College Station, Texas.
USC, featuring two true freshmen, a sophomore and a junior transfer - in addition to Salas -- finished its first action of the season at 1-over 289, 12 strokes behind first-place Georgia (11-under 277). The Bulldogs were seven strokes better than second-place Vanderbilt (284) with Alabama third (286) and LSU fourth (287). Behind USC were fellow powers Duke and UCLA, tied for sixth at 293.
Salas' 2-under 70 was good for a tie for ninth, five strokes back of Alabama's Brooke Pancake. During a solid first round, Salas birdied the first hole and bogeyed 4 for an even front 9. Birdies on 13 and 17 moved her to 2-under for the round.
Sophomore Cyna Rodriguez finished tied for 18th at par 72. She started out at 2-over on the front 9 with only a birdie on 6 but was 2-under on the back 9, sinking birdies on 11 and 16.
Freshman Rachel Morris tied for 21st in her collegiate debut at 1-over 73. She was even going out with a bogey on the 5th hole and a birdie on the 9th. She had birdies on 13 and 18 to offset three bogeys and remain in the hunt for the top 20.
First-year Trojan Lisa McCloskey, who transferred to USC after a pair of All-American seasons at Pepperdine, is tied for 30th at 2-over 74. She had one birdie against three bogeys.
Freshman Sophia Popov tied for 40th after the first round at 3-over 75. She was 4-over entering the final before finishing on a strong note with a birdie on 18.
