Senior Lizette Salas, junior Lisa McCloskey and sophomore Cyna Rodriguez all carded 2-under rounds to lead the No. 1 USC women's golf team to the second-lowest score of the day and into third place after two rounds of the 2010 Texas A&M Fall Preview on Tuesday (Sept. 14) at the Traditions G.C. in College Station, Texas.
USC, featuring two true freshmen, a sophomore and a junior transfer - in addition to Salas - is at 5-under 571 (289-282), five back of first-place Alabama (566) and one behind second-place LSU (570). The Crimson Tide used an 8-under second round to take over first while round-one leader Georgia was 9-over Tuesday to fall into a tie for fourth with Vanderbilt (574). UCLA and Duke are tied for sixth (580).
Salas's second consecutive 2-under has her as part of a six-way tie for fourth at 4-under 140. Rodriguez is tied for 15th at 2-under 142 (72-70) while McCloskey is tied for 21st at par 144 (74-70).
Salas was 2-under on the front 9, which included three birdies, and even on the back 9. She is two back of co-leaders Brooke Pancake of Alabama and Marina Alex of Vanderbilt.
Rodriguez was 2-over through four holes after a double bogey on 4, but she notched four birdies over the remaining 14 holes without another blemish to move up the board. McCloskey, like Salas, had four birdies against one bogey on the day.
Freshman Rachel Morris is tied for 24th at 1-over 145 (73-72), posting a par round despite a double on 9 and a bogey on 10. Freshman Sophia Popov is tied for 54th at 7-over 151 (75-76).
Action concludes Wednesday.
