Strong First Days For USC Men At ITA Regionals

MALIBU, CALIF. — With all hands on deck for the 2015 ITA Southwest Regional Championships, the USC men's tennis team has a powerful group of Trojans making deep runs in the singles and doubles draws in Malibu, Calif. Four Trojans have punched tickets to the singles Round of 16 with a winning start to the tourney, and two USC doubles pairs have secured quarterfinal slots for tomorrow's competition.
Of the 12 Trojans in action, a well-balanced foursome tacked up Round of 32 victories today to follow up a winning Thursday in their respective opening rounds. Junior Rob Bellamy locked in with his third straight singles victory of the tournament with his three-set win in today's Round of 32. Freshman Logan Smith also had a three-setter to get through, and the newcomer dug in for a three-set comeback to also take his place in tomorrow's Round of 16. Senior Max de Vroome had delivered his own comeback heroics on Thursday to advance, going on to cruise through straight sets today to advance. Junior Nick Crystal had hammered out a decisive win in his Round of 64 match yesterday and advances to tomorrow's Round of 16 through a walkover against today's opponent.
In doubles, USC put six teams in the mix when competition began yesterday. Today, Four Trojan pairs were in action in the morning's Round of 32, and all four won out in that round. In the Round of 16, USC had two duos notch victories to advance. The No. 3 seeded pair in the draw, Max de Vroome and Jack Jaede, pulled off a heart-stopping 8-7 (8) win in the Round of 16 to advance. Fellow Trojans Connor Farren and Logan Smith, meanwhile, stayed in relative cruise control to punch a quarterfinal ticket with an 8-3 decision.
