USC Women Land Road Win At UC Riverside
November 13, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
Aliyah Mazyck scores 21 and Kristen Simon adds 18 to pace the Trojans to victory over the Highlanders.
RIVERSIDE, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team was strong once again from 3-point land to overpower host UC Riverside and stay the course to a road win tonight in Riverside. Five first-half threes were the boost the Trojans needed to take control of this one, as the second half evened up but still saw USC in the driver's seat. The victory nudges the Trojans out to a 2-0 start on the year.
UC Riverside was more productive from the floor in the first half of play, but USC was connecting when it counted from 3-point range. With Aliyah Mazyck landing four first-half 3-pointers, the Trojans gripped a 38-22 lead at the break. UCR had shot 42.9 percent from the floor to outpace USC's 40 percent, but USC was winning out on the boards 21-13 to go with its 5-of-13 effort from beyond the arc to keep the Highlanders at bay through the first 20 minutes of action.
USC stayed at 40 percent from the floor in the third while the Trojans put the Highlanders out of reach as the hosts slipped to 29 percent from the floor in that frame. By the final buzzer, USC had hit at a 39 percent clip in the game, beating out UC Riverside's 37 percent. USC nailed six 3-pointers in the win — four from Mazyck — and outrebounded the Highlanders 39-29. Kristen Simon was just a board away from a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds to go with her 18 points, just behind Mazyck's game-high 21 points. UC Riverside was paced by Michelle Curry's 19 points on the night.
USC opened up an 8-0 lead on the Highlanders out of the gates, then took control thanks in large part to back-to-back 3-pointers from Aliyah Mazyck. That had the Trojans gripping a 14-1 advantage. UC Riverside finally got a field goal to drop with a 3-pointer at 7:45, then made a little rally with a 7-0 surge that trimmed USC's lead to 19-11. Jordan Adams would have the last word of the quarter for the Trojans, scoring from the post to net a 21-11 USC lead in the final minute of the first. To open up the second quarter, Mazyck landed her third 3-pointer of the day. She'd add another late in the quarter, and then Sadie Edwards slipped in a last-second score, giving USC a 38-22 halftime lead.
USC pressed on in the third with Kristen Simon striking from the paint and working her way into double digits. A three from Adams pumped the Trojans up to a 46-30 advantage, and USC would end the quarter on a 9-0 run with contributions from Minyon Moore, Simon and Mazyck to construct a 55-33 lead entering the fourth. There, the scoring pace slowed, but USC remained in control, with Marguerite Effa joining the scoring party for the Trojans, who wrapped up a 64-46 road win.
USC now turns to take a trip to Santa Clara, facing the Broncos in a 7 p.m. contest on Friday (Nov. 17).
