No. 12 USC Men's Volleyball Swept At No. 5 UC Irvine
January 12, 2018 | Men's Volleyball, Features
Gianluca Grasso led USC with 14 kills.
The No. 12-ranked USC men's volleyball team was swept in a non-conference match at No. 5 UC Irvine, 25-17, 25-19, 28-26, on Friday (Jan. 12).
USC fell to 3-2 on the season, while UCI moved to 3-1.
Gianluca Grasso led USC with 14 kills, Ryan Moss added 13 kills while hitting .458 and Sam Lewis had 7 kills while hitting .636.
Aaron Koubi had 13 kills (hitting .526) and 8 digs for the Anteaters, while Karl Apfelbach added 9 kills and 6 blocks and David Parker had 7 digs.
UCI outhit USC, .449 to .227, and had more blocks (8.0 to 1.0) and digs (23-15).
UC Irvine jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and steadily pulled away while hitting .529. In the second set, it was USC that started with a 4-1 lead, but the Anteaters soon after scored back-to-back points to move ahead 9-7 and the Trojans couldn't catch up. USC was in control for most of the third set, starting off with a 6-2 lead, until UCI tied it at 21-21, but Troy went up 24-22 before the Anteaters caught up again and then ended the set shortly after on a kill followed by a USC hitting error.
USC's next scheduled match was set to be at home against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Jan. 13), but it was cancelled due to the Gauchos' travel issues related to this week's Santa Barbara mudslides (it has been rescheduled to March 1 at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center). So the Trojans now next will participate in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge at UCLA, first facing defending NCAA champion and top-ranked Ohio State on Thursday (Jan. 18) at 5 p.m. PT and then meeting No. 9 Penn State on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 11 a.m. PT. Both matches will air live on Pac-12 Network Los Angeles.
