USC Women Complete Road Sweep With 58-47 Win At Utah
January 14, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans charge up to 13-4 overall with a sweep of the mountain schools behind another game-high effort from Aliyah Mazyck.
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — The USC women's basketball team won its third straight Pac-12 game in securing a road sweep with today's 58-47 win over host Utah. The Trojan defense was interruptive once again, forcing 21 turnovers out of the Utes to counter a few cold spells on the offensive end. By the final buzzer, USC had locked up a key road win that improves the Trojans to 13-4 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 play. Utah goes to 12-5, 3-3.
Utah was outshooting USC in the first half of action, but the Trojan defense had stalled out the Utes to the tune of nine first-half steals to force 13 turnovers by Utah. That helped USC hold the advantage, up 30-23 at halftime on 35.5 percent shooting from the floor. Utah was hitting at a 37.5 percent clip, but still USC had done its job to hold off the hosts through those first 20 minutes. Utah closed the gap down to three during the third, only to see USC warm up in the fourth and round out the game shooting 37.3 from the floor. Utah also shot 37.3 in the game, but USC delivered three more 3-pointers and had forced 21 turnovers out of the Utes. USC scored 19 points off those takeaways while six Trojans had at least one steal in amassing a team total of 14.
USC received another game-high effort from Aliyah Mazyck, who dropped four more 3-pointers and finished with 20 points for the Trojans. Back in action for this one was Sadie Edwards, who had 16 points for USC while Kristen Simon delivered double digits once again in finishing with 14 points. Minyon Moore stood out with five rebounds, assists and steals to keep the Trojans chugging along to the road sweep. Utah received 10 points from Megan Huff and 11 rebounds from Emily Potter as Utah outrebounded USC 41-31 in this one.
USC hit a cold streak again in the third but the Trojans soon got their feet back under them to keep pace with the Utes. Up 43-37 on a last-second jumper from Simon to close the third, USC manufactured a 7-0 surge on buckets from Jordan Adams and Simon and a back-breaking three from Mazyck. Up double digits with a 50-39 lead with 8:10 to go, USC held its ground. Utah got to within six at 53-47 with 2:50 remaining, only to see Edwards strike with a take to the hoop with 1:40 to go. By the final buzzer, USC gripped a 58-47 road victory.
The Women of Troy now return to Los Angeles for a couple Pac-12 rematches at Galen Center. USC gets another shot at Stanford in an 8 p.m. faceoff on Friday (Jan. 19) before looking for more revenge against California at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 21).

After a relative shootout in the first quarter, things cooled a bit in the second while USC went five minutes without a bucket before getting back on track. Utah had snuck into the lead 18-17 during USC's dry spell, but the Trojans finally got a finish off of one of many steals by the USC defense to go up 19-18. USC would not trail the rest of the frame, although Utah tied it up 21-21 at 3:36 with a three-point play. USC would respond with a take to the hoop by Aliyah Mazyck, and later it was Sadie Edwards who landed a clean three and then converted two free throws in the final seconds to get into double digits and lift her Trojans to a 30-23 halftime lead.
