No. 1 USC Secures 16-5 Win Over No. 16 San José State
October 07, 2018 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Eleven Trojans get to the back of the net to keep USC perfect in home waters in 2018.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team righted the ship with a balanced effort to swamp visiting No. 16 San José State 16-5 today at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. After taking their first loss of the year in a road game at Stanford the day before, the Trojans were composed in controlling matters in home waters. By the final whistle, 11 Trojans had scored while goalie Vaios Vlahotasios collected nine saves in the cage. The win improves USC to 18-1 overall.
USC opened things with two early goals from Hannes Daube and Matt Maier before San José State knocked one in to get on the board. After Daniel Leong punched one in for the Trojan cause, the Spartans answered back once more to keep it a one-goal margin at 3-2. Jake Ehrhardt would spark a scoring run for the Trojans to close out the first, striking on a power play before Marin Dasic converted a 5-meter penalty shot and then scored a natural goal to make it 6-2 USC after eight minutes of action. The Spartans were undeterred, though, scoring on their first possession of the second before the Trojans regrouped and rattled off a seven-goal surge that spanned halftime Maier, Ehrhardt and Daube would score their second goals of the day during that rally, while Sawyer Rhodes added a 5-meter penalty shot and Orestis Apergi and Luka Karaman also joined the USC scoresheet.
Up 13-3 with that run under its belt, USC saw SJSU strike back with 1:26 on the clock in the third. Christian Hockenbury had an answer, however, and USC gripped a powerful 14-4 lead entering the fourth frame. There, Luke Wyatt and Marko Vavic wrapped USC goals around a Spartan strike, finishing out a 16-5 final win for the hosts.
Next up for USC is a trip to the Mountain Pacific Invitational next week. Hosted by Stanford, the event runs Oct. 12-14 in Palo Alto.
