Freshman is the third Trojan to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Year.
USC freshman Hannes Daube stands tall as the third Trojan to be named the MPSF Newcomer of the Year, leading a pack of seven USC players named to All-MPSF teams as the Trojans enter this weekend's MPSF Tournament.
Joining Daube on the All-Pac-12 First Team is another USC newcomer in sophomore Jacob Mercep, On the All-MPSF Second Team are two Trojans who have upgraded last year's Honorable Mention, with sophomore Marko Vavic and junior Matt Maier standing tall with second-team selections. Earning All-MPSF Honorable Mention for the second time in his Trojan career is junior Marin Dasic, who is joined by two fresh faces on the All-MPSF honor roll in senior Zach D'Sa and freshman goalie Nic Porter.
Hannes Daube's decorated freshman campaign has included a record four MPSF Newcomer of the Week awards. He's the Trojans' third leading scorer with 49 goals while averaging a team-best 1.96 goals per game. His hottest outing of the year was a six-goal outburst against Stanford, marking one of his 14 multiple-goal games this season to date. Daube is the third Trojan to earn MPSF Newcomer of the Year honors, following teammate Matt Maier's selection in 2016 and Joel Dennerley in 2008.
A transfer from San José State, sophomore Jacob Mercep has made himself right at home at USC and in the MPSF. Now an All-MPSF First Team pick along with Daube, Mercep was MPSF Player of the Week earlier this season. Second on the team in scoring with 53 goals, Mercep has scored in 23 games with multiple-goals in 17. He topped out most recently with five goals in a USC win over Cal last month.
Standing tall on the All-MPSF Second Team is sophomore Marko Vavic, who leads USC in scoring with 55 goals this year to bulk up his career count to 106. An All-MPSF Honorable Mention recipient as a freshman, Vavic has scored in 26 of USC's 29 games to date, with 17 multiple-goal outings. He's joined by junior Matt Maier on the All-MPSF Second Team. Maier, too, has upgraded from Honorable Mention status last season after having churned out a season-best 34 goals so far this year. With goals in 21 different games, 11 of those outings were multi-goal affairs.
A trio of Trojans highlight the All-MPSF Honorable Mention list this year. Junior Marin Dasic now has his second set of All-MPSF accolades, following his freshman season selection. This year, Dasic has delivered a season-best 34 goals, including the recent game-winner vs. UCLA. Dasic has scored in 23 games with eight multiple-goal efforts. This year, Dasic is joined by freshman goalie Nic Porter and senior Zach D'Sa on the honor roll. Porter has hauled in four MPSF Newcomer of the Week awards to match fellow freshman Daube's record tally. In the cage, Porter is averaging 9.77 saves and 7.03 goals against per game. He set a career high with 15 saves in USC's most recent win over Cal. Captain D'Sa, meanwhile, has been a force for the Trojans in his final year. D'Sa has also scored a career best with 38 goals to date. He's scored in 23 games with 11 multiple-goal outings, including a career-high four goals in a win at Long Beach State.
Daube, Dasic, D'Sa, Maier, Mercep, Porter and Vavic are all set to combine forces with their Trojan teammates this weekend in a push to defend back-to-back MPSF Tournament titles in home waters. USC has a semifinal slated for tomorrow (Nov. 17) at 1 p.m. against Cal at Uytengsu Aquatics Center to fight for the right to a spot in Sunday's 1 p.m. final.
