Cheng Jin, Issei Tanabe lead Trojans after 18 holes.
Junior Cheng Jin and sophomore Issei Tanabe were USC's top finishers today in the Saint Mary's Invitational first round on Monday (Nov. 5) at Poppy Hills G.C. in Pebble Beach, Calif., as the Trojans finished the day eighth in the 18-team field.

USC combined for a 6-over 290. BYU raced to a day one lead of 13-under 271, 10 strokes better than second-place Pepperdine. Third-place Arizona was the only other school under par at 2-under.

The Trojans, coming off of a win at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in their last outing, were led by junior Kyle Suppa for most of the round before a triple bogey on his final hole at 9 left him at 2-over 73, tied for 38th.

Jin and Tanabe are tied for 27th at 1-over, each of them sinking four birdies on the day. Sophomore Kaito Onishi joined Suppa in the tie for 38th at 2-over.

Senior Justin Suh had a rare off day with a 4-over 75, tied for 57th, while freshman Charlie Reiter, playing individually, is tied for 46th at 3-over 74.
