USC Women Take Down San Diego State

The Women of Troy defeated San Diego State 5-2 on Friday (Feb. 16) in San Diego after a three week hiatus from competition. With the win, USC improves to 4-2 on the season and are now 44-4 against San Diego State overall.
The Trojans began doubles on a high note as No. 26 pair Angela Kulikov/Rianna Valdes defeated SDSU's Jenny Moinard/Mia Smith 6-2 on court one. The Aztecs came back swinging as Nnena Nadozie/Magda Aubets took down USC's Madison Westby/Constnace Branstine 6-4 on court three. SDSU would round out doubles to claim the first point of the match when Jana Buth/Paola Diaz beat USC's Gabby Smith/Becca Weissmann in a tight match with a 7-6 (4) score.
Entering the singles portion of the competition with a one point deficit fired up the Women of Troy, and Constance Branstine made that known as she claimed the first singles point of the afternoon defeating SDSU's Abbie Mulbarger 6-2, 6-2 on court six. Trojan Rianna Valdes continued to roll with the positive momentum on court three by beating Aztec Paola Diaz 6-3, 6-4 to make the overall score 2-1. Becca Weissmann notched another point for the Trojans as she took down Magda Aubets 6-2, 6-3 on court two.
The match was won on court five when Angela Kulikov defeated SDSU's Nnena Nadozie 6-4, 7-6 (5) to clinch for the Women of Troy.
Although the match was already won, the remaining two matches were played out. No. 102 Madison Westby fell to Aztec Jenny Moinard in a three set match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Trojan No. 23 Gabby Smith would have the final word of the afternoon by defeating SDSU's Jana Buth 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to make the final match score 5-2.
USC returns home to Marks Stadium next weekend for a non-conference match against California on Friday (Feb. 23) and a double header on Saturday (Feb. 24) against Fresno State and Long Beach State.
