USC Women Upset California in Exciting 4-3 Victory
February 23, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The No. 48 USC women's tennis team upset No. 34 California 4-3 on Friday (Feb. 23) in a non-conference counting match at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. With the win, USC is now 5-2 on the season and 39-36 all-time in their series with the Golden Bears.
"This is a great win for our program this year," said head coach Alison Swain. "I'm really proud of the girls. We've been working on being great competitors, and I think we've grown a little bit with every match we've played this spring. Today was a great example of that growth. We had a lot of momentum from our doubles starts, which we've been working on all week. That was great to see. We were able to carry that momentum through the close moments in singles. It was truly a team effort."
Doubles kicked off the cold afternoon at Marks Stadium. On court one, USC's No. 39 Angela Kulikov/Rianna Valdes sped off to a quick start as they defeated Cal's Anna Bright/Julia Rosenqvist 6-1. Courts two and three continued to play, but Trojan tandem Gabby Smith/Becca Weissmann would finish their match first on court two. They defeated Golden Bear duo Olivia Hauger/Maria Smith 6-2 to close out doubles and claim the first point of the day for Troy.
The Women of Troy would strike first in singles as Angela Kulikov used her momentum from doubles to cross-over to her 6-3, 6-0 victory over Cal's Vivian Glozman on court five. Over on court two, Golden Bear No. 29 Anna Bright put Cal on the scoreboard as she defeated USC's Becca Weissmann 6-3, 6-1.
The attention turned to court six as Trojan Constance Branstine fought to win a three-set comeback 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to place USC in a strong position to claim the overall match.
Cal didn't give up easily as Maria Smith tallied another point for the Golden Bears with her 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 decision over USC's No. 110 Madison Westby on court four. USC maintained the lead with a 3-2 score.
Courts one and three had each extended to third sets where a Trojan win on either court would seal the deal for USC. After losing her first set 7-6 (3), Rianna Valdes showed grit and perseverance as she fought hard to claim the second set with an identical 7-6 (3) score. Valdes blasted through her third set to win 6-1 and clinch for the Women of Troy.
Although USC already had four points to win the match, court one was played out. Cal's No. 42 Olivia Hauger took the last point over USC's No. 30 Gabby Smith 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to close out the evening of play.
The action continues for USC tomorrow (Feb. 24) as the Women of Troy take on a double-header: Fresno State at 12 p.m. and Long Beach State at 4 p.m.
