February 24, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The USC women's tennis team successfully won both matches in their doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 24) to extend their winning streak to four matches. The Trojans rattled off a quick win over Fresno State 4-2 to begin the day, and then a strong 4-0 victory over Long Beach State in the second match. The Women of Troy are now 7-2 on the season.
USC started off the day with a doubles win from court two as Gabby Smith/Becca Weissmann defeated Alessia Dario/Katerina Stloukalova 6-0. Fresno State responded with force as Bulldog pair Olivia Noble/Juliane Triebe beat USC's Madison Westby/Constance Branstine 6-1 on court three. Fresno State had the final word in the doubles competition as No. 49 Georgia Lawson/Emma Wilson upset Trojan tandem No. 39 Angela Kulikov/Rianna Valdes 6-3 on court one to claim the doubles point.
Entering singles at a one-point deficit lit a fire under the Women of Troy. No. 110 Madison Westby blasted through her match on court four as she took down Bulldog Juliane Tribe 6-1, 6-0. Soon after, USC's Rianna Valdes avenged her doubles loss by swiftly defeating Fresno State's Georgia Lawson 6-3, 6-0 on court three to push the Trojans ahead 2-1 overall.
On court six, Fresno State's Ndindi Ndunda topped Trojan Constance Branstine 6-0, 6-3 to tie up the score at 2-2. On court one, USC's No. 30 Gabby Smith tallied another point for the Trojans with her 6-2, 6-4 victory over Bulldog Emma Wilson.
Becca Weissmann closed out the first match of the day as she clinched for the Women of Troy with her solid 6-3, 6-2 win against Fresno State's Katerina Stloukalova to secure the 4-2 team victory.
With the win over Fresno State, USC is now 18-1 all-time against the Bulldogs.
USC was already warmed up for the second match of the day. Just like in the first match, USC's Gabby Smith/Becca Weissmann kicked off doubles with a decisive win on court two over Long Beach's Naralia Munoz/Lena Pacholski 6-1. Trojan duo Madison Westby/Becca Weissmann closed out doubles with their 6-2 victory against the 49'er pair of Georgia Gulin/Sadaf Sadeghvaziri on court two. The Women of Troy entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 lead.
Trojan No. 110 Madison Westby continued to have a strong performance as she rolled her momentum from the first match into the second. She defeated Long Beach's Naralia Munoz 6-2, 6-1 to increase USC's lead to 2-0. Shortly thereafter, Alexa Corcoleotes would have her first dual match win as a Trojan when she beat 49'er Carlota Casasampere 6-3, 6-2 to notch another point for USC.
Angela Kulikov would close out the day of competition by beating Long Beach's Maren Helgo 6-4, 6-2 on court three. USC is now 35-0 all-time against Long Beach State.
