Trojans Pull To Within A Stroke Of First After Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Second Round
February 19, 2018 | Women's Golf, Features
Freshman Jennifer Chang fires 69, one off the lead after 36 holes.
Freshman Jennifer Chang fired a 3-under 69, her first sub 70 round as a Trojan, while freshman Alyaa Abdulghany was also under par to lead the No. 12 USC women's golf team into second place, just one back, after the second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Golf and C.C. in New Orleans on Monday (Feb. 19).
Â
USC, in its second spring event looking for its third win on the season, turned in the best second-round in the 17-team field and now sits at a combined 9-over 585 (293-292), one back of first-place Florida. The Trojans are after their second win in New Orleans, the first coming in 2013.
Â
The Trojans will tee off with the Gators and third place Michigan State at 8 a.m. off of 1 in the shotgun start at 6 a.m. PT on Tuesday.
Â
Said USC Head Coach Andrea Gaston: "It was blowing 15 miles per hour out there and they just stayed focused and kept grinding it out. It was a tough course on a difficult day but the girls did a great job."
Chang, in her second outing as a Trojan, is tied for second at 5-under 139 (70-69), just one off the lead, thanks to a stellar second-round that featured three birdies without a bogey.
Â
Sophomore Allisen Corpuz remained among the top 5 at even 144 (70-74) after her two birdie, four-bogey round as she vies for her first career top 10 as a Trojan.
Â
Abdulghany stayed in the hunt as well and is now tied for eighth at 1-over 145 (74-71) after her two-birdie, one-bogey day.
Â
Freshman Gabi Ruffels is tied for 69th at 13-over 157 (79-78) while sophomore Divya Manthena is tied for 81st at 18-over 162 (79-83).
