No. 15 UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball Beats USC
March 01, 2018 | Men's Volleyball, Features
Trojans fall in 4 sets.
Keenan Sanders had 21 kills and 6 digs and Corey Chavers added 15 kills and 7 blocks to lead the No. 15-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 non-conference win over USC on Thursday (March 1) in USC's Galen Center.
The match was rescheduled from earlier in the season when the Gauchos had travel issues because of the Santa Barbara mudslides. It was the teams' first meeting since UC Santa Barbara left the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, USC's longtime conference, to join the Big West this season.
UC Santa Barbara improved to 6-5 in 2018, while the Trojans lost their sixth consecutive match to fall to 4-13.
Gianluca Grasso and Jack Wyett each had 14 kills for USC, with Grasso hitting .423 and getting 11 digs and 3 aces. Sam Lewis added 11 kills and 3 aces, while Jon Rivera came off the bench to get 7 kills.
Sanders hit .429 for the Gauchos and Chavers was at .419. Randy DeWeese had 10 digs, 5 blocks and 3 aces, while Grady Yould had 8 digs.
UCSB hit .386 to USC's .303. The Gauchos had more blocks, 14.5 to 4.0, while the Trojans had more digs (40 to 34).
UC Santa Barbara scored 5 straight points to open up a 7-2 lead in the first set and USC could never overcome the deficit as the Gauchos posted 5.0 blocks and served 3 aces. The Trojans used a 4-0 run to build a 14-10 lead in the second set, but UCSB soon after had its own 4-point run to go up 19-17 and Troy was unable to catch up as the Gauchos hit .520. USC started the third set with a 3-0 lead and never relinquished it while hitting .484. The fourth set was tight until UCSB went on a 4-0 run to build a 13-10 edge, but USC tied it at 17-17 before the Gauchos soon after regained control with a 3-point run to move ahead 22-19, all the margin needed to close out the match while hitting .469 in the set with 4.0 blocks.
USC's next match is at Big West foe UC San Diego on March 7 at 7 p.m. PT. The Trojans then return home to host non-league foe Harvard on March 11 at 7 p.m. PT in the Galen Center.
