No. 21 Trojans Head to Desert to Close Regular Season

The Women of Troy can secure third place in the Pac-12 with a win over the Sun Devils
LOS ANGELES – No. 21-ranked USC lacrosse (8-7, 5-4 Pac-12) completes its regular-season schedule with a visit to Tempe, Ariz., where the Women of Troy will face Arizona State (6-10, 1-8) on Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m. PT. A win over the Sun Devils would lock up the No. 3 seed for the Trojans in the first-ever Pac-12 tournament and set up a rematch with the sixth-seeded Devils in the first round.

Senior All-American defender Lydia Sutton (35gb, 22ct) and All-Region senior goalie Gussie Johns (9.17 gaa, .490) lead the Trojans' defense. Midfielder Kerrigan Miller's (30g, 8a, 39dc, 37ct, 32gb) all-around game leads the attack. Johns, the national leader with 76 ground balls, Miller, and Sutton are each on the Tewaaraton Award's Watch List.
After graduating over 200 goals from 2017, USC turns to Kaeli Huff (25g, 2a), and Emily Concialdi (14g, 2a), on the attack. Jackie Gilbert runs the center circle (58dc). Among newcomers, Kelsey Huff (22g, 3a), Izzy McMahon (26g, 9a), and Maeve McMahon (14g, 13a, 35dc) have made immediate impacts. Sophia Donovan has also been a recent spark with her 12 goals (2a, 6gb, 3ct). Crease defenders Morgan Kuligowski (14gb, 10ct) and Natalie Byrne (14gb, 8ct) are each integral parts to the Trojans' defense, which ranks first in the Pac-12 with 8.91gaa. SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE: The Sun Devils (6-10, 1-8 Pac-12) enter the final week of the regular season on a four-game losing streak. ASU has lost nine of its last 10 since opening its inaugural season winning five of six contests. The Devils are led by Kerri Clayton who has scored 40 goals and collected 15 assists for 55 points. Emily Glagolev has 34 points (20g 14a) and is among the eight Devils who have scored double-digit goals this season. Maddy Hunter has won 53 draw controls and ranks third in the Pac-12 at 4.42 per game. In goal, Berkeley Bonneau has a .419 save percentage and is third in the league with 8.25 saves per game. ASU leads the Pac-12 at 9.88 saves per game as a team. Bonneau leads her team with 51 ground balls while Hunter ranks second with 38. Hunter also has a team-high 19 caused turnovers. Rachel Gregory serves as another defensive anchor with 20 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. The Trojans and the Sun Devils met on March 10 at McAlister Field. USC earned a 14-3 win in the teams' historic first game.

LAST TIME OUT: USC snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating regional rival San Diego State, 17-7, at McAlister Field. It was the first time the teams met in a non-conference game since having faced each other six previous times as co-members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. On Senior Day, goalie Gussie Johns delivered 11 saves and picked up five ground balls. Senior defender Lydia Sutton matched her career high with five ground balls and had four caused turnovers. She also earned her first two points of the season with a goal and an assist to her credit. Senior attacker Alexis Kardias scored two goals and recorded an assist. USC's leading scorers were sophomores however as Izzy McMahon led with four goals and Hope Anhut became the 21st Trojan to record a hat trick with three goals against the Aztecs.

Sophomore midfielder Kerrigan Miller was later added to the national watch list on March 22 in the first round of additions. The award honors the top men's and women's lacrosse player in the country. Previously, Courtney Tarleton and Michaela Michael were named nominees. This year, the list of 25 national nominees will be named on April 26. The five men's and women's finalists will be announced on May 10 with the ceremonial presentation to the winner set for May 31 in Washington, D.C.
PAC IT UP: USC won the 2016 and 2017 MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) championships but plays under the banner of the Pac-12 Conference in 2018. Women's lacrosse became the 13th women's sport sponsored by the Pac-12 when it was added for 2018. With the addition of Arizona State, the Pac-12 reached the minimum of six teams to receive an automatic qualifier bid into the NCAA championship. The first-ever Pac-12 Lacrosse Championship will be held April 26-29 at Prentup Field at University of Colorado. From the end of 2015 to the middle of the 2019 season, USC won a school-record 22 consecutive conference games. The Trojans were undefeated in the MPSF in 2016 (9-0) and 2017 (8-0).
