USC Women's Tennis Victorious Over Colorado
April 06, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The No. 40 USC women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over Colorado today (April 6) in Boulder, Colo. With the win, the Trojans are now 10-7 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 Conference play.
The Trojans opened up the afternoon with a 6-3 doubles win on court two as USC's Smith/Weissmann defeated Buff pair Daniel/Oleynik. Soon after, Trojan tandem Branstine/Van Alphen beat Colorado's Wojcik/Ronaldson 6-3 to claim the doubles point.
USC entered singles with a one-point advantage. This was the first time USC has won the doubles point in the last five matches.
The Trojans rolled over their doubles momentum into the singles portion of the competition. No. 35 Gabby Smith blasted through her match as she defeated Colorado's Howng 6-2, 6-3 on court one. Becca Weissmann was the next Trojan to notch a point on the board for USC with her win over Buff Daniel 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 on court three. Weissmann's win set up the next Trojan point to clinch the match.
That point would come from court two as No. 92 Rianna Valdes defeated Hule 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Women of Troy. This is Valdes' third clinch of the season, tying Becca Weissmann for most clinches on the team. Valdes' other clinches occurred against Pac-12 opponents California and Oregon.
Although the match was already won, the remaining courts were played out. Madison Westby won her match next on court five as she defeated Wojcik 6-2, 6-1 to increase USC's lead to 4-0.
Constance Branstine was close behind with a win of her own by defeating Beck 6-1, 6-0 on court six. Court four was the last to finish as USC's Angela Kulikov fell to Colorado's Ronaldson 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Up next, USC will travel to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Utes on Sunday (April 8) at 10 am PT.
