April 08, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The No. 40 USC women's tennis team collected their second win of the weekend as they defeated the Utah Utes 4-1 today (April 8) in Salt Lake City. The Women of Troy are now 11-7 overall on the season and 4-3 in Pac-12 conference play.
The match began outside, but when it started to hail in the beginning of doubles, everyone was relocated to Utah's indoor tennis complex. The Utes had the first word of the day as Ute duo Chisholm/Robertson defeated USC's Branstine/Westby 6-2 on court three. Over on court one, Utah's Petrovic/Cheng upset Trojan tandem No. 32 Kulikov/Valdes 6-4 to claim the doubles point.
Losing the doubles point lit a fire under the Trojans as Becca Weissmann claimed the first win for Troy with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Utah's Jena Cheng on court three. USC's Angela Kulikov followed suit as she beat Ute Taylor Calton 6-4, 6-1 on court four to push USC ahead 2-1 overall.
Up next, USC's No. 92 Rianna Valdes defeated Utah's Brianna Chisholm 7-6, 6-2 on court two. Finally, Trojan Constance Branstine defeated Utah's Victoria Robertson 6-4, 6-1 on court six to clinch the match for the Women of Troy. This is Branstine's first clinch of the season.
Next up for the Trojans, USC will return home to face Arizona on Friday (April 13) and Arizona State on Saturday (April 14). Friday afternoon's match against Arizona will also be USC's senior day celebrating Trojan seniors Gabby Smith and Madison Westby.
