April 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
THIS WEEK
The USC women's tennis team returns to Marks Stadium for the final homestand of the season. The Women of Troy will take on Arizona on Friday (April 13) at 1:30 p.m. and Arizona State on Saturday (April 14) at 12 p.m.
SENIOR DAY
Before Friday's match against Arizona, the Trojans will honor seniors and co-captains Gabby Smith and Madison Westby.
ORACLE/ITA RANKINGS UPDATES
The Trojans brought home two conference victories over Pac-12 opponents Colorado and Utah. In this week's Oracle/ITA National Rankings, the Trojans moved down to the No. 41 spot.
Senior Gabby Smith remains USC's highest nationally ranked singles player securing the No. 48 position. Smith's most recent singles victory against Colorado's Linda Huang made her the first Trojan this season to enter the "20-Win Club". She is 20-13 on the season with five wins against singles opponents in the Top 16.
Junior Rianna Valdes is ranked No. 98 in the most recent rankings. Valdes is 13-5 on the season.
In doubles, the Trojan tandem of Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes hold the No. 46 position. The duo is 9-7 throughout the course of the season.
SCOUTING ARIZONA
The Arizona Wildcats are not nationally ranked, nor do they have any nationally ranked singles or doubles players. They are 9-12 on the season and 0-7 in Pac-12 Conference play. They are currently on a five-match losing streak with recent loses to Washington (4-1) and Washington State (4-1). USC is 51-15 all-time against the Wildcats in their series dating back to 1980.
SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE
The No. 33 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils are 13-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Freshman Lauryn John-Baptiste is ASU's only ranked singles player at No. 53. The Sun Devils boast three doubles pairs with national rankings: No. 21 John-Baptiste/Hattingh, No. 49 Slaysman/Kolarova and No. 66 Anderson/Huergo. Last weekend, ASU defeated Washington State (4-2) and Washington (4-0). The Women of Troy are 54-22 all-time against the Sun Devils since beginning their series in 1980.
