Allisen Corpuz fires 69, Amelia Garvey cards a 70 to lead Trojan first round.
Sophomore Allisen Corpuz fired a 3-under 69 while freshman Amelia Garvey turned in a career-best 2-under 70 to lead the No. 5 USC women's golf team to third place after the first round of the 2018 NCAA Madison Regional at the University Ridge G.C. on Monday (May 7).
The Trojans, in pursuit of their 21st straight trip to the NCAA Championships finals, combined for a 3-under 285, six back of first-place Virginia and two behind second-place No. 4 Duke in the 18-team region in which the top six teams will advance. No. 12 Arizona State was fourth (even) with Oregon State fifth (1-over), host Wisconsin sixth (2-over) and Illinois seventh (4-over).
Corpuz registered her fourth round under 70 in her last eight outings to tie for fifth after 18 holes, two off the lead. She eagled the par 5 second hole and birdied 4 for a 3-under front 9. She was 4-under through 17 before a bogey on 18.
Garvey carded her best round in Cardinal and Gold with a three-birdie day to tie for seventh. She was 2-under going out and even coming in.
Freshmen Jennifer Chang and Alyaa Abdulghany are tied for 26th at 1-over 73. Chang had three birdies during her round, Abdulghany one, coming on the 11th hole. Freshman Gabi Ruffels is tied for 66th after a 5-over 77.
