No. 1 Long Beach State Beats USC In 4 Sets
January 25, 2019 | Men's Volleyball, Features
TJ DeFalco had 12 kills and Kyle Ensing added 11 kills and 6 aces to help the top-ranked, defending NCAA champion Long Beach State men's volleyball team remain unbeaten in 2019 with a 25-17, 26-24, 19-25, 25-17 win over unranked USC in a non-conference match on Friday (Jan. 25) at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
Long Beach State improved to 7-0 on the season, but USC became the first opponent to take a set off the 49ers this season after they had won their first 20 sets. USC fell to 5-3 overall. The teams competed for years as members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation before the 49ers moved to the Big West in 2018.
Ryan Moss had a match-high 14 kills for USC while hitting .444 and he served 4 aces, Gianluca Grasso added 9 kills, Sam Lewis had 7 kills (hitting .500) and Matt Douglas had 7 digs.
Long Beach State hit .384 overall and served 13 aces, while the Trojans hit .237 with 9 aces.
Josh Tuaniga had 5 aces and 7 digs for LBSU, while Jordan Molina added 11 digs.
Long Beach State scored 3 consecutive points early in the first set to go up 4-2, but USC tied it at 10-10 only to see the 49ers score the next 6 points to regain control of the set as they hit .488 and served 4 aces. USC built an 11-8 lead in the second set, but LBSU then scored 11 of the next 16 points to go up 19-16 before USC tied it at 19 all, then the set stayed tight until the 49ers held off the Trojans at set point by scoring the final 3 points. The third set see-sawed until the Trojans scored 5 consecutive points to open an 18-14 lead and LBSU couldn't recover (USC hit .412 in the set and served 5 aces). Long Beach State responded quickly in the fourth set by building a 6-1 lead (aided by Josh Tuaniga's 3 straight aces) and USC could never recover
USC next returns home to host non-conference opponent Princeton on Thursday (Jan. 31) at 7 p.m. PT in the Galen Center.
