USC Women Fire Up For 86-76 Win Over Cal
February 15, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans shoot over 50 percent, with Aliyah Mazyck and Minyon Moore scoring a combined 55 points.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team received season-high efforts from Aliyah Mazyck and Minyon Moore en route to an important 86-76 Pac-12 win over visiting California. The victory avenged a road loss to the Golden Bears, and improved the Trojans to 15-9 overall and to 5-8 in Pac-12 play. Cal goes to 14-10, 5-8 with the loss to the host Trojans tonight at Galen Center.
USC shot 56.7 percent from the floor and was outrebounding Cal 17-15 by halftime to grip a 43-39 lead on the visiting Golden Bears, who had shot 47.2 percent in those first 20 minutes. With three first-half assists, junior Minyon Moore had made a move to No. 6 all-time on the USC career charts, passing up Cheryl Miller and pulling even with Jamie Hagiya. USC would fall behind by seven in the third but had it at a one-point game entering the fourth. There, the Trojans found another hot streak and left the Golden Bears behind, finishing out the game shooting 51.6 percent from the floor while Cal dropped to 46.2. The Trojans also won out on the boards 39-32.
USC was paced by two season-bests from Mazyck and Moore. Mazyck had the final bucket to bump her to a team-high 28 points on the night, while Moore wound up with 27 to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, solidifying her as USC's No. 6 all-time assist provider. She's now three away from the No. 5 spot. The Trojans also received a double-digit night from Kayla Overbeck, who scored 15 while pulling down six rebounds. Ja'Tavia Tapley led USC on the boards with eight rebounds. Cal, meanwhile, saw Kristine Anigwe finish with 30 points and 14 rebounds, with Recee' Caldwell adding 15 points and Asha Thomas scoring 11 for the Golden Bears.
USC hit at a 59-percent clip from the floor and hauled in 11 rebounds in the first 10 minutes of action to scoot out ahead of the Golden Bears 26-19 after one quarter of play. Aliyah Mazyck knocked down two 3-pointers in less than a minute to help turn a two-point game into a 24-19 USC advantage entering the final minute of the first, while Minyon Moore went to the line and knocked down two free throws to wrap the first with the Trojans up 26-19. The fast pace continued in the second frame, with USC opening up with a 6-0 surge on buckets from Mazyck, Moore and Kayla Overbeck to manufacture a 32-19 USC lead. Cal would fire back with an 8-0 surge, however, and later carved down the margin to one at 34-33 with 4:30 on the clock. USC answered with Mazyck's third three and then two more tosses from the line to fo up 39-33, but, again, Cal made a counter move. The Bears pulled even at 39-39 with 45 second left in the half, only to see Moore tally back-to-back buckets to finish out the half with USC up 43-39.
In the third, Cal pulled even at 51-51 after following back-to-back Mazyck buckets with a three-point play and another score. Mazyck punched up her 21st points of the night next, but Cal drain a three soon after to move ahead 54-53 with 5:25 on the clock. Later, the Bears scored seven straight points to open up a 61-54 advantage with 2:05 left in the third. USC had come up empty from the floor for almost five minutes before Overbeck broke through with a bucket that was soon followed by a take from Mazyck, and it was a one-point game at 61-60 Cal on the way into the fourth. The battle raged on in the fourth, with USC moving ahead 66-62 on back-to-back three-point plays from Moore. Cal fought back and tied it up at 67-67 and 69-69 before the lead went back and forth for the next stretch. Cal got up 74-73 with 3:55 to go, and then Ja'Tavia Tapley converted down low to take back the lead at 75-74 with 3:15 to go. Mazyck drained two free throws next, and Moore got to the hoop to lift USC ahead 79-74 entering the final two minutes. Moore would keep USC in the driver's seat the rest of the way, adding another bucket and converting from the free-throw line to build out an 84-76 lead with 15 ticks to go. Mazyck added one more bucket for good measure, and the Trojans had an 86-76 win over Cal in the books by the buzzer.
USC now turns to face No. 10 Stanford in a 12 p.m. matchup on Sunday (Feb. 17) at Galen Center.
