Sophomore Jennifer Chang leads final-round charge with season-best 68.
Sophomore Jennifer Chang fired a season-best 3-under 68 to lead the No. 1 USC women's golf team during a final-round charge at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes G.C., the Trojans finishing just short in third on Tuesday (Feb. 5).
USC, which joined the field battling three days of cold, wet and windy conditions, didn't capture its fourth win of the season but did secure its third top 3 finish in as many tournaments this year, finishing third at 19-over 871 (299-288-284). Stanford held on for the win at 15-over 867 while UCLA was second at 17-over 869.
"It's always nice to kick off our spring season at one of our home facilities and in such a prestigious event," USC Coach Justin Silverstein said. "I'm proud of how hard we battled through incredibly tough conditions. Experiences like these will pay off when we get into the postseason."
Chang led a Trojan final-round rally that saw them combine for the best final round and the second-best 18 holes of the tournament. USC pulled to win three strokes late before settling for third.
Chang registered a season-best tie for fourth at 3-over 216 (75-73-68), her fourth top 10 this year and fifth in the top 11. She turned in a five-birdie final round that included a 3-under back 9, coming on 14, 16 and 17.
Junior Allisen Corpuz was USC's next highest finisher, tying for a season-best 16th at 6-over 219 (77-69-73). She had one birdie in her round against three bogeys.
Sophomores Gabriela Ruffels (76-70-74) and Amelia Garvey (71-78-71) tied for 16th at 7-over 220. Garvey, with her fourth top 16 finish this season, posted a five-birdie round and was 4-under midway through 18 holes before running into some trouble on her back half. Ruffels, now with five top 16 results, had one birdie today.
Freshman Malia Nam rounded out USC's quintet today, closing with her best round of the tournament to tie for 41st at 13-over 226 (78-76-72).
