Jennifer Chang ties for first, third Trojan to earn medalist honors on the year.
No. 1 USC secured its fourth win of the season in wire-to-wire fashion while sophomore Jennifer Chang tied for first for her second career medalist honor on the final day of the Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., on Sunday (March 17).
It was a good St. Patrick's Day for the Trojans, who donned green first-place ribbons after the 16-stroke win, USC's fourth this season and first of 2019. Troy finished at 12-over 876 (292-293-291), well ahead of Houston's second-place 28-over 892 while Kentucky was third at 30-over 295.
USC has now won at least four tournaments in six of the past seven seasons.
Chang, the third Trojan to finish first this season, tied for first at 2-under 214 (72-72-70) with Kentucky's Leonie Bettel, Oklahoma's Libby Winans and Houston's Leonie Harm. Chang turned at 3-under after birdies on 8 and 9, bogeyed 11 to drop to 2-under overall and was caught by the trio of golfers late.
The tie for first is her best finish since a win as a freshman. It's also good for her team-best sixth top 11 this season, third in the top 5.
Sophomore Amelia Garvey tied for fifth at 4-over 220 (74-73-73). She was 2-over through 12 but a birdie on 15 helped secure the season-best top 5 finish and her sixth straight in the top 16 to start the season.
Freshman Malia Nam tied for seventh at 5-over 221 (74-73-74), her seventh top 17 this season and fourth in the top 10. She had two birdies on the day.
Sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany, who played individually this weekend with junior Aiko Leong, joined Nam in a tie for seventh (76-74-71), her 1-under final round including birdies on 6, 7 and 9. It was her third top 7 this year as she finished with her eighth round of par or better this season.
Sophomore Gabriela Ruffels (75-74-74) and Leong (74-74-75) tied for 11th at 7-over 223. For Ruffels, who had a roller coaster day with six birdies in her 2-over round, it was her sixth top 21 finish this year. For Leong, the tie for 11th was a USC career best.
Junior Allisen Corpuz finished tied for 30th at 13-over 229 (73-80-76), her first round a counter for the Trojans.
USC returns to action at the ASU Invite in Tempe, Ariz., March 29-31.
