USC Women's Tennis Upsets Cal 6-1

The No. 16 ranked USC women's tennis team upset No. 15 ranked Cal 6-1 on Friday (March 29). This victory extended USC's winning streak to nine-matches. The Trojans are 13-2 overall and 4-0 in Pac-12 Conference play.

The Golden Bears came out strong on courts one and two holding 0-2 leads. On court three, the Trojan duo of Branstine/Ewing maintained the lead throughout to win their match 6-2 over Cal's Stloukalova/Smith. After starting the match down, USC's No. 20 Kulikov/Valdes, on court one, fought back to win 6-3 to claim the doubles point. This is the ninth time USC has won doubles this season. USC has not lost a match that they have won the doubles point.

The Trojans entered singles with a 1-0 lead. On court five, Trojan No. 124 Danielle Willson lost to Cal's Maria Smith 6-1, 6-2. This loss snapped her 12-match winning streak and was the first loss of her dual match career as a Trojan.

On court three, USC's Rianna Valdes won her first set against No. 21 ranked Olivia Hauger from Cal 6-2. Hauger battled back to take the second set 6-3, but Valdes would have the final word by winning the third set 6-2 to push USC ahead 2-1 in the match.

Trojan Angela Kulikov swiftly defeated her Golden Bear opponent, #74 Anna Bright, 6-0 in the first set. Bright gained momentum in the second set to win 6-1. After exchanging sets back and forth, Kulikov finished on top with a 6-4 victory to win her match.

After winning the first set 6-3 on court six, USC's Constance Branstine fell in the second set 6-3 to Golden Bear Hana Mraz. Branstine fought back to win the third set 6-3 to clinch the match for the Women of Troy. This is her second clinch of the season.

Although USC had already clinched the match, the remaining courts were played out. USC's Ana Neffa won a close first set 7-6 (7) on court four. Her Cal opponent, Katerina Stloukalova, took the second set 6-3. Neffa was victorious in the third set winning 6-1 to claim the match.

Court one was the last to finish as No. 49 Salma Ewing defeated No. 30 Julia Rosenqvist 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

USC returns to the courts tomorrow (March 30) as they take on No. 7 Stanford at 12 p.m.
