Freshman Cameron Henry debuts with 66, Trojans two off the pace.
Senior Justin Suh fired a 6-under 64 while freshman Cameron Henry made his collegiate debut with a 4-under 66 – matched by senior Sam Kim – as the No. 6 USC men's golf team finished tied for second after the first round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo G.C. in Santa Cruz, Calif., on Monday.
The Trojans, with six top 2 finishes this year including three victories, combined for a 2-under 348 in the six-play, five-count format, tied with Oregon and two back of host San Jose State. Oregon is fourth at 353.
Suh, the world's top-ranked amateur, was 3-under going out with an eagle on the par 5 6th hole and was 3-under coming home with birdies on 14, 15 and 16, registering his 16th round in the 60s this season and the 21st of par or better in 25 outings. He is tied with San Jose State's Sean Yu and Stanford's Isaiah Salinda.
Suh's 64 was his third this year and his lowest in the first round. His previous two 64s came on par 72 courses.
Sharing a tie for fourth are Henry and Kim. Henry, playing individually in his first collegiate round, opened with a 3-under front with four birdies. He doubled 10 but came back with birdies on 13, 16 and 17 for his memorable debut round.
Kim joined him at a season-best 66 thanks to six birdies, including four on the front 9 and two on a 2-under back. Kim's best finish this year has been a tie for 19th.
"I'm so happy for Cameron," USC Coach Chris Zambri said. "He has been working as hard or harder than anyone on the team. So nice to see that pay dividends for him. There was a lot of great stuff from the team today, especially from Justin and Sam. They really carried us. We need some other guys to step up so we can continue to play well."
Sophomore Kaito Onishi joined the top 10 mix, tied for ninth at 1-under 69. He eagled 9 to turn at par and mixed four birdies and three bogeys on the back. His 11 rounds in the 60s are second most on the team.
Sophomore Issei Tanabe and junior Ryan Slater (playing individually like Henry) are tied for 49th at 4-over 74 while freshman Charlie Reiter and junior Kyle Suppa are tied for 55th at 5-over.
USC will tee off with Stanford Tuesday beginning at 1:18 p.m. Live Golf Channel coverage begins at 4 p.m. PT.
